The BUS Grant – Who Doesn’t Like Free Money?
Upgrade Your Boiler with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
Are you ready to take a step towards a greener future while saving on your energy bills? The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is here to support you in your journey towards decarbonising heat in buildings. This initiative offers upfront capital grants to encourage the installation of heat pumps and biomass boilers in both homes and non-domestic buildings across England and Wales.
What is BUS Grant?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a groundbreaking program designed to accelerate the transition to more sustainable heating solutions. By providing generous grants, BUS aims to make the adoption of heat pumps and biomass boilers more accessible and affordable. As part of the scheme, property owners can benefit from substantial cost reductions on eligible heating system installations.
How does it work?
Property owners who are interested in upgrading their heating systems can apply for the following grants through installers certified by the Microgeneration Certification Service (MCS):
- £5000 off the cost and installation of an air source heat pump
- £7500 off the cost and installation of a biomass boiler
- £7500 off the cost and installation of a ground source heat pump, including water source heat pumps
The grant values will be deducted upfront from your project quote, thanks to the diligent efforts of your chosen installer. The installer will take on the role of an application intermediary and liaison between you and the scheme administrator, Ofgem.
Who’s Behind the Scheme?
Ofgem is the scheme administrator and responsible for the seamless operation of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Their duties include processing voucher applications, making payments to installers, and publishing reports on the scheme's performance. Additionally, Ofgem will ensure compliance with the scheme's regulations to ensure its effectiveness and fairness.
The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy sets the policy and legislation framework for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. This commitment is outlined in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (England and Wales) Regulations 2022, reinforcing the government's dedication to decarbonising heat and promoting sustainable energy solutions.
The Easiest Way to a Greener Home
One of the most appealing aspects of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is its “installer-led” approach. This means that your chosen installer will take care of the majority of the process for you. From applying for the BUS grant to liaising with Ofgem and confirming the successful installation of your new heating system, your installer will handle the details, leaving you to enjoy the benefits of a more energy-efficient home.
